Murcia, February 22, 2025. Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia has taken a significant step forward in optimizing the monitoring of heart failure patients by incorporating LOLA, Tucuvi's Clinical AI Agent. LOLA enables more efficient and frequent remote monitoring of chronic patients through Safe and Clinically Validated Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This initiative is part of a collaboration between the hospital, AstraZeneca, and Tucuvi to enhance patient follow-up.
Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the body, a condition affecting approximately 10% of the population over 75, according to Dr. Francisco Pastor, cardiologist and head of the hospital’s Heart Failure Unit.
As part of their routine care, chronic heart failure patients undergo follow-ups every three months. Now, for the first time in the region, Conversational AI is being used to enhance this monitoring process.
The hospital’s Cardiology Department, in collaboration with AstraZeneca and Tucuvi, has introduced LOLA to autonomously call patients. LOLA collects health data at scheduled intervals, asking about symptoms and vital signs to assess the patient’s condition.
Dr. Francisco Pastor highlights how this solution complements healthcare professionals:
LOLA follows the same guidelines we use in our daily consultations—whether these are conducted in person or over the phone—with the advantage of saving and optimizing time. If the patient doesn’t answer, the AI continues making follow-up calls, eliminating the need for a nurse to be on the other end. In a short time, it has proven to improve patient monitoring more effectively.
Dr. Pastor notes that three-quarters of the monitored patients do not present any issues. However, warning signs appear in the remaining 25%, at which point the system automatically generates alerts, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on assessing and managing these high-risk patients.
The data collected during these interactions is analyzed and structured in Tucuvi Health Manager (THM) platform. The specialized nursing team at the Heart Failure Unit reviews these preconfigured alerts, ensuring that medical teams prioritize their time and attention on those patients who require intervention.
This innovative approach enables more frequent and personalized follow-ups, improves treatment adherence, and enhances self-care. Patients receive timely reminders about important health guidelines, helping prevent potential complications and disease progression.
Among the most common symptoms of heart failure, Dr. Pastor highlights shortness of breath (dyspnea), which limits daily activities, and leg swelling—two key indicators that LOLA helps monitor closely.
